Breastfeeding Basics

How often should you breastfeed?

For the first month you should feed between 8 and 12 times a day. Most newborns eat every 2 to 3 hours. Newborns usually don’t go more than 4 hours without eating.

~If you have had preemies who can now nurse, feed them as often they want to get their weight up.

What is colostrum?

It is also known as first milk, beestings, or  immune milk. It is what your body makes before the breast milk comes in. It contains antibodies which boosts the immune system. It is higher in protein and minerals and lower in fat. Its thicker than milk and has a yellowish color. It gives your newborn a healthy start in life.

How long should a feed last when breastfeeding?

First consider a few different things. Your milk flow may be slow or fast. Be sure you are correctly positioning your baby or babies so they are feeding efficiently. It does take longer when your breast milk has not yet come in. It also depends on how your baby or babies feed. Some babies will slow down and graze while they look around or take little breaks.

~Typically newborns feed longer than older babies. Newborns can feed 20-45 minutes and older babies ages 4-7 months can feed 10-20 minutes.

Will I have enough milk for twins?

Usually, yes! The more you feed and empty your breasts, the more milk you will produce.  If you have concerns, hiring a lactation consultant can really help. Contact us at EmbracingBabies.com if you need assistance.

A breast pump can be used to get your milk supply up, which can be frozen and used for later.

How do you know if your newborns are getting enough?

Weight gain is the best way to know if your babies are getting enough milk. Remember though, newborns will lose weight in the first few days from birth but will regain this in about 2 weeks. Your baby/babies should be feeding every 1.5-3 hours. Your breasts should feel empty or soft after each feed. Your newborn(s) should have about 7 wet and 3 poopy diapers a day. Track this on a chart to keep record.
